Senior Company - ages 11-16

SENIOR COMPANY

Currently SENIOR COMPANY meets on;

SUNDAY MORNINGS - 10am - 12pm in DRAMA STUDIO 1 at St JOHN THE BAPTIST SCHOOL

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS - 5:00-7:00pm at ST JOHN'S MEMORIAL HALL

Senior company is for our more advanced students who are ready to take the next step in their performance training. We will encourage the students to use all elements of Musical Theatre in tandem and ask the students to make choices and decisions about their character using script/character analysis techniques. Using a combination of singing, dance and storytelling to explore and create, our Senior Company sessions promote positive participation and achievement through the development of skills in communication, self confidence and expression.

At the end of each term children will have the opportunity to present what they have been working on to their friends and family. This will be a themed production with songs, scenes and dance routines from a specific musical and/or a showcase of individual songs, dances and monologues. Senior Company will also be invited to perform in concerts, festivals and performances across the year.

What will I learn?

In Musical Theatre we focus on all elements of performance, singing, acting and dancing. Every term we work towards an end of term performance, which is usually a sharing of a specific musical or a showcase of different songs, scenes and dances that we have been working on throughout the term. Throughout the term we use the chosen material to work on technique is all areas, including vocal and physical fitness, dynamic movement and stagecraft. This class develops the student’s knowledge and they will start working with scripts and how to break down and create characters. They will work on their improvisation skills, which will help build their confidence and help them step out of their comfort zone. The students start to learn how to sing correctly and safely and add dance movements.

   Drama

In drama we will learn many different styles and techniques including; improvisation, physicality, vocal projection, different uses of the voice, emotional recall, mime and physical theatre. Developing character and storytelling is at the heart of our drama classes, so we encourage your child to make the character their own and make their own decisions on different elements of their character, this will help them develop confidence in their ideas and ability.

Singing

In singing Seniors will develop good technique. We will take a close look at vocal health, vocally warming up, combating constriction, loosening jaw and tongue, posture and general vocal maintenance.  Breath control is hugely important as a singer, we will look at using your diaphragm and other muscles to support breathing and sound to enhance areas such as projection. We will start to look at the use of different vocal qualities as different styles of singing require different qualities. Some of the main focal points will be; speech quality, twang, sob, falsetto/mix and many others. Lastly but definitely not least, we take a deep dive into acting through song. It’s really important that the words and the emotion behind the music influence your performance of the song. We will work on interpreting the song in your own way, thinking about the context and character.

Dance

During our class we will provide a triple-threat dance class including commercial, lyrical, contemporary, street jazz and musical theatre styles. In dance we focus on improving our Senior Company's fitness, posture and quality of movement. The class will start with an energetic aerobic warm-up and technique work. Throughout the term we will introduce a range of different dance styles and genres. The focus is on encouraging self-expression and creativity through dance.
